WhatsApp introduces a UPI transaction background payment capability

The Payment Background feature of WhatsApp will allow Indian users to add themes of currency transactions over the messaging platform.

WhatsApp has developed a new payment tool that lets users transact with their connections in thematic backgrounds. The ‘Background Payments’ feature has been specifically built for Indian users.

WhatsApp’s users can utilize backgrounds to supplement birthdays, holidays, or gifts and journeys money.

“Built for India, this new feature is relevant, exciting, and memorable as it helps people easily convey a feeling along with sending money,” the company said in a statement.

Manesh Mahatme, Director of WhatsApp Payments, said, “WhatsApp is a safe space where people share their thoughts and feelings with their friends and family.

With Payments Backgrounds, our effort is to bring excitement to everyday payments through WhatsApp and enable our users to express themselves if they wish, through a range of emotive themes denoting celebrations, affection, warmth or fun.”

This is comparable to the Google Pay service, which allows customers to choose from a range of backgrounds during money transfer. To take advantage of the function, WhatsApp features an icon on the payment page.

In November 2020, WhatsApp was authorized to facilitate payments by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) through the Uniform Payment Interface (UPI).


The approval was nevertheless obtained for the gradual deployment of WhatsApp Pay, beginning with 20 million registered users.

According to the NPCI data, in July 2021, WhatsApp saw UPIs of 0.47 million, worth Rs 45.33 crore. With a market share of 46 percent and 34.45 percent, Flipkart-owned PhonePe and Google Pay have been leaders in the space.

“The core idea of this feature update is to create a more personalized experience for the sender as well as the receiver by adding an element of expression when friends and family exchange money,” the company said.
